Had to get serious about cutting HVAC costs

It was the spring of 2020 and my wife and I were suddenly looking at a bit of a financial abyss staring back at us.

I’d just been sent home from the zone controlled HVAC of my office and she’d lost her part time job outright.

Not only was I working from home but I was doing so with a pay cut as well. And my wife’s part time job was critical to our finances as well. We had some serious regrouping to do in order to simply pay the mortgage. So the cost cutting came fast and furious. There was no incidental spending at all. We only spent money on essentials. And we needed to save on those essentials as well. One main target of saving was the HVAC cooling costs. Where we live, the air conditioning can be on for 8 months out of the year. But it’s the summer where it really hits the pocketbook with a wallop. We’d made efforts before to rein in the HVAC cooling costs. But we just weren’t ever all that disciplined about it and so not committed to making cooling costs a priority. Well, 2020 changed all of that. I got about making the house as tight as possible. The main culprit was around all the doors so I replaced all the weather stripping. Then we made sure that the drapes were pulled during the heat of the day in order to prevent direct sunlight heating. From there, it was really just all about the thermostat. And man, we kept it in the mid 80’s that entire summer. Really though, we got accustomed to just pulling out a fan if we were hot. Our efforts saved us hundreds of dollars that would have otherwise been wasted.
