Custom built liquor cabinet for anniversary gift

For our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary, I wanted to do something special for my husband.

I was looking for a unique gift that would be both practical and lasting.

In the past, we’d taken trips, gone out to fancy dinners or invested in some improvements around the house. This time, I hoped to do something that would be more personal. After a lot of thought, I decided to buy my husband a liquor cabinet. He collects different kinds of whiskey, from Scotch to Irish, and the bottles were hidden inside a cupboard. Some of these bottles are quite beautiful and they are all very expensive. As I searched for a suitable cabinet, I became more discouraged. Even at the high-end furniture stores, the cabinets were built of pressboard and very generic. My sister recommended that I try a custom furniture maker. After a little research online, I found a custom cabinet maker who is located several hours away. Because of the considerable distance, we handled most of the design and details through emails. The furniture builder was wonderful to work with. He helped me to determine the size, style and all of the particulars of the liquor cabinet. He encouraged me to measure the bottles and I even sent photographs of my husband’s collection. There was a bit of a time constraint, but the craftsman was able to complete the cabinet in time for our anniversary. He was then kind enough to not only deliver the piece but carry it inside in order to surprise my husband. Although the cabinet was rather expensive, it was worth it. It is a gorgeous piece of furniture, and my husband was delighted with it.

Working with custom furniture shop when designing new kitchen

I lived with an outdated and unattractive kitchen for nearly fifteen years.

The cupboard doors had warped and no longer closed properly.

The countertop was badly scratched, stained and most of the finish had worn off. The floor was outdated linoleum and extremely ugly. All of the appliances needed to be replaced, and I was in desperate need of a new sink, faucet, windows, light fixtures and more power outlets. When my husband and I were finally able to afford to remodel the kitchen, I started looking into options. I was not satisfied with the quality of the cupboards or countertops I found. I was willing to invest more money for hardwood cupboards and marble countertops. I wanted something I could count on to hold up to wear and tear and still look beautiful over the years. After checking all of the larger hardware stores and even searching online, I finally consulted with a custom furniture shop. Because each piece is made by hand, I had a lot more freedom in the design of the kitchen. I wasn’t limited to standard options for corner cupboards or typical widths. I worked with the custom furniture builder who offered recommendations. Together, we figured out the best setup for me. We designed an island and a breakfast bar. We chose glass fronts for some of the cupboards and a built-in refrigerator. The custom furniture shop certainly took longer and cost me a lot more but the results are definitely worth it. I am so impressed with the aesthetics, durability and usability of my new kitchen.

A custom made wine rack for his wedding gift

Anytime a friend of mine gets married I do the same type of gift. I work as a custom furniture maker. I tell the bride or groom to select something that they want handmade by me. A new table, bed surround or custom built wine case, no matter what I will do it. I also can work with an interior designer to plan a new look in one of the rooms in the house. Whatever the new couple wants, I will give it to them. They have to spend some money for all the custom made furniture materials, like my wood, stains and screws. But, I don’t bill for my time plus effort. If they choose to design a room in the house, they spend money for the pieces but they would not get a bill for my services. I asked my buddy if he wanted any particular style in the house or if he wanted a client furniture piece. My buddy liked the look of a posh Fifth Avenue style. I knew this could be extravagant plus I also knew what his budget was. My buddy can not afford to design the whole house like that or even a single room. So I agreed to do a custom built piece just for my buddy to reflect the style. I did a custom made wine rack for him to reflect that black and white theme. I had it made mostly of glass so that you can see the fancy wine bottles plus corks. I also had special shelves plus holders for odd shaped bottles. The top of the wine rack is a crisp black walnut that looks really fancy. My friend is going to love this piece. It is going to be giant, but look so nice in his house.

Tuscan Beauty for the whole house is a bit much

When you work as an interior designer, some jobs are great and others are just stressful.

My newest client Stella is obsessed with Tuscany.

Stella wanted her whole house to have Tuscan Beauty furnishings. She asked me if I was familiar with Tuscan Beauty styles plus if I had ever been to the country. She was quite snotty plus uptight about it. It was the only look she wanted. Tuscan Beauty is very rich plus attractive looking for a single room. Tuscan Beauty brings air of wealth plus sophistication to any space along with being heavy plus ornate. I was enthusiastic to do a room in Tuscan Beauty for her. The only issue is that I wanted to add some traditional furniture plus some more neutral colors to the rest of the home. I thought it was unwise to do a whole house in just one style. Having only dark reds, browns and golds would get to be overwhelming overtime. It would really darken up her home. I personally would have a headache from it. I wanted to pick an Old World Style table for her kitchen. I thought it would still bring Tuscan Beauty idea to the kitchen without the bold colors. Nope, Stella was not happy with it, and unless it was dark plus in rich colors, she was not happy. Thankfully I was able to sneak a few custom made pieces in. I got a small table that had a hidden drawer and was made out of all light brown hardwood plus it blended in with the dark plus rich colors that Tuscan Beauty brought to the kitchen.

There's no need to worry in here

When our partner plus I bought our home, the people I was with and I were thrilled by the sizable fireplace centered in the kitchen… Built from river stones with a polished concrete hearth plus black walnut mantle, the fireplace is unquestionably gorgeous plus the focal point of the house! The surrounding property is made up of twenty acres of forest plus offers a plentiful supply of firewood… All of us looked forward to supplementing the heating system with this free energy source. All of us imagined ourselves sipping wine in front of a roaring fire on cold Winter time afternoons, and we’ve now owned the home for nearly 6 years plus only made 1 fire. All of us suddenly discovered that cutting down trees plus chopping logs is taxing work plus awful, however dragging wood through the home creates a sizable mess. Starting a fire is difficult, time-consuming plus leads to smoke, fumes, flames plus soot. To keep warm, the people I was with and I needed to sit right up near the fire! Plus, the control unit is located in legitimately close proximity to the fireplace. When there’s a fire burning, the oil furnace doesn’t start up plus the rest of the home is cold cold. The fireplace is now simply for decoration plus a waste of space, then i’ve begun looking into the option of converting it into a natural gas heater. A gas insert would supply the look of a wood burning fire with none of the downsides. All of us could start up the gas furnace with the tap of a button on a cordless remote. We’d have the ability to adjust temperature plus fan speed, plus the heat would be spread evenly throughout the room. I’ve already discussed the project with a local HVAC supplier plus gotten a quote… Converting to natural gas isn’t cost-prohibitive plus the task would be completed in a single day.

Getting Pre-Op Work at the Hospital Means Low Thermostat Settings

I had to go to the hospital to get pre-op done.

When they were taking me upstairs where the first area of the pre-op was done, I was so cold.

I told the aide that they must have had a two for one sale on air conditioning parts that week. She laughed and said that this area was used only for pre-op procedures. People tended to get overheated which caused an unusual stress on the body and that is not good before surgery. For that reason, they kept the control unit a bit lower to keep the patients cool during pre-op. I got up to the testing room and I was surprised that I could just sit back in a recliner for the pre-op. I didn’t need a revealing hospital gown, however I did need to get an IV and all sorts of medical probes. Within a split hour, I felt like I was overheated. I was beginning to sweat and I couldn’t get over the adrenaline rush I felt. There was a nearby fan blowing on me to help with the overheating. I almost laughed when I was annoyed earlier about why the A/C was running so cold. I abruptly knew why the A/C thermostat was set so low. The A/C was for those of us who had to have pre-op work. The tests aren’t really that invasive, however it abruptly gives your heart and body the feeling that it is under stress. When the test was done, they took me back to a waiting area. I was cheerful the air conditioning thermostat wasn’t as low here, and I had learned something about the difference in temperatures throughout the hospital.

Husbands are Handy to Have Around When You are in a Panic Over A/C and Fire

My husband came downstairs from the bedroom and looked at the oven which did not have flames anymore.

I was baking a cake the other morning, and I had spilled some batter in the oven. I decided that after the cake was done baking, I was going to turn on the cleaner in the oven and let it cook clean. I sat at the table making cake decorations out of sugar when I heard an unusual noise. I looked at the oven and saw flames on the oven floor! I couldn’t turn off the cleaning cycle and the door was locked shut, like it always is during self-cleaning mode. I couldn’t just rest there and stare at the oven hoping there would be no catastrophe. It had become so tepid in the apartment that I turned down the setting on the thermostat on the air conditioning, however I still felt hot. I had the ventilation fan turned on and that didn’t do much of anything. I thought all of the air conditioning might be getting pulled out through the ventilation fan. I was opening windows and the front door, however nothing was finally working and I was beginning to really not know what to do. My husband came downstairs from the bedroom and looked at the oven which did not have flames anymore. He turned up the speed on the ceiling fan and he turned the a/c from fan to high cool. In my panic to get rid of the heat of the fire, I hadn’t paid attention to what I was doing with the A/C setting. My husband told me he would check out the oven in the morning, however I should not use it again until he could check it out. I took a deep breath when he went back upstairs to read, because once he again I knew he would take care of everything.
